• Outcall

  Outcall means the therapist makes the journey and arrives at the room you are already in, so no part of a quiet evening asks you back out into the city.

• Deposit

  A deposit here is the first half of the fee rather than money set aside, named as a figure in the thread once the hour is agreed and paid before she leaves.

• Balance

  The balance is the second half of the fee, settled at the door as she comes in, so that money is done with before the lamp is turned down.

• Arrival window

  From the moment an hour is confirmed to the knock at your door, reckon on forty to sixty minutes anywhere in central Amsterdam, day or night.

• Booking thread

  Everything is arranged in one written thread: the address, the hour, the length and a name, with nothing said aloud and nothing asked about your reasons.

• Quiet request

  One line in the thread asking for little talk, no music or one lamp is read as an instruction rather than a mood, and it settles the room in advance.

• Low light

  Turning the ceiling light off and leaving one low lamp is a small change that alters a great deal of an hour, which is why the practice is named for it.

• Session length

  Sessions run from one hour to a full eight hour night, and a quiet guest who cannot decide is usually better served by ninety minutes than by an hour.

• Overnight

  An overnight is a block of eight hours, priced whole instead of hour by hour, and the greater part of it is spent asleep rather than awake.

• Central Amsterdam

  Central Amsterdam here means the districts inside and just around the canal ring, all reached on the same arrival figure and none of them charged differently.

• Cancellation and refunds

  What is kept when a booking is called off depends on how much notice your message carries and on nothing else, and damages are never claimed on top of it.

• Rescheduling

  A booking can be moved once at no cost, provided the request reaches the thread more than a day ahead and the new date falls inside the following fortnight.

• False bookings

  A false booking is one made under somebody else’s name or number, or sent as a prank, and it is a different thing from an appointment that was simply missed.

• Twenty-one or over

  Everyone who books and everyone else in the room has to be twenty-one or over, which is why a photo document may be looked at briefly at the door.

• Limits

  Your therapist decides what a session includes, she says where her limits are before it begins, and those limits hold unchanged for the whole of the visit.
